What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences or distressing memories. It can also be beneficial for managing anxiety, stress, and other emotional challenges. EMDR therapy typically involves guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (BLS) while recalling traumatic events, which can help reprocess and integrate these memories in a healthier way.
Why it works: your brain allocates the resources to handle visual or auditory stimuli leaving less resources to severe trauma response. Taking observer position when processing traumatic memories can help reduce their emotional intensity. Trauma survuivors usually notice first improvements in sleep quality and reduced anxiety levels after 3-6 sessions. It is usually administered by a trained therapist, but self-administered BLS can also be beneficial for relaxation and stress reduction.
